Last week I received a question from Susan. Susan explained that she is currently taking Vitamin D3 daily and was wondering if she can take hemp seed oil at the same time.
The short answer, yes you can take them at the same time as both are completely safe. However, I thought it would be a great opportunity to discuss vitamin D and its importance to our health.
What is vitamin D and why is it important?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and hormone (messenger in the body). One of its primary roles is regulating calcium levels in the blood that is essential for strong bones and muscles. It also has other roles in the body that include nerve and muscle function, immune function and reduction of inflammation!
What happens if I don’t get enough vitamin D?
Vitamin D deficiency affects almost 50% of the population worldwide and has been associated with increased risk of cancers, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, cognitive impairment (decreased brain function), fractures and falls, and autoimmune conditions. Demonstrating exactly why it’s so important that we are getting enough vitamin D.
Where can I get Vitamin D from?
Only small amounts (around 5-10%), of vitamin D can be obtained through food (eg. fish and eggs ). The majority of our vitamin D must be absorbed through UVB light from the sun. Vitamin D exposure is influenced by latitude, season, sunscreen, and skin pigmentation. Aim for a minimum of 30 minutes in the sun daily. Wearing sunscreen can block vitamin D absorption, so it’s good to get some time in the sun without sunscreen. However, keep in mind that too much exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer.
Should I supplement with Vitamin D3?
It depends on your vitamin D levels, this can be tested through a simple blood test with your doctor. If you do need to supplement up to 4000 IU/day of vitamin D3 is considered safe by the Institute of Medicine (USA). However, it’s best to first ascertain your vitamin D levels in the blood.
