How It All Began
Back in 1997, the founders of 13 Seeds were traveling through Europe when they first laid eyes on vast fields of hemp growing in Romania. These were not just any crops, but robust, vigorous plants thriving on the outskirts of cities and rural villages alike. They were struck by hemp’s resilience, beauty, and versatility; a plant that had been largely forgotten in Australia but was flourishing overseas.
This early encounter planted a seed of curiosity that stayed with them.
A Family Challenge Leads to a Breakthrough
Fast forward to 2004: one of their six young children developed chronic psoriasis, a condition that left him covered in painful skin lesions. Determined to help their son, they consulted Melbourne’s top psoriasis specialist who prescribed a complex cream made from over 25 different ingredients. Although it initially helped, the family wondered if only one key compound was responsible for the improvement.
Having already done some early research on hemp seed oil’s healing properties, both when applied topically and taken internally, they decided to put it to the test on their son.
After just two weeks of applying hemp seed oil directly to the lesions and giving him a tablespoon morning and night, they saw remarkable results: the psoriasis nearly vanished. When combined with Vitamin D therapy, simply regular, gentle sun exposure, the skin condition completely disappeared.
This life-changing experience was the spark that transformed their curiosity into a mission.
From Curiosity to Cultivation: Laying the Foundations
Eager to explore hemp’s potential, they reached out to the few Australian pioneers who were already growing and researching industrial hemp. It quickly became clear that the industry was still in its infancy, with minimal government support and few commercial opportunities.
But Tasmania’s clean environment and fertile soil held promise. In 2014, after discussions with the Department of Primary Industry in Tasmania and leading hemp researchers at the University of Tasmania, the family believed the time was right. Changes to federal laws were on the horizon, opening the door for hemp cultivation in Australia.
The First Seeds of Success
In 2015, the first trial hemp crop was planted on their Southern Tasmania farm. From day one, they committed to organic growing practices and careful irrigation, keen to understand how these factors affected crop yields and quality.
The following year, they expanded their trials across three different sites in the Huon Valley, experimenting with biological nutrient amendments alongside irrigation methods.
A New Era Begins
Then came the big news: in April 2017, the Federal Government approved hemp seed as a food product. This was a turning point.
And so, 13 Seeds was born, a brand rooted in family, science, and Tasmania’s pristine environment, dedicated to sharing the natural healing power of hemp with others.
Why It Matters
