Welcome back to 3 Question Friday! This week we received a range of questions from our community and I'm happy to be able to clear up your thoughts!! I will try to keep today's post short and sweet, so this week's questions are…
- Jane was curious “What do you think of the ketogenic diet for a person over 60?”
- Colleen wanted to know “Do you have any ideas for healthy snacks?”
- Carmen asked “When is the best time to take hemp seed oil capsules?"
1. What do we think of the ketogenic diet for a person over 60?
What exactly is a ketogenic (keto) diet? The keto diet is high fat (55-60%), moderate protein (30-35%), and very low carbohydrate (5 to 10%). This is slightly different to a low carb diet that is considered to have less than 30% of our overall calories from carbs. When we eat a large amount of fats, we switch our primary fuel source from glucose (found in carbohydrates) to ketone bodies (breakdown of fats) (1).
There are many different reasons for someone choosing to go on a keto diet that may include increased energy, brain function, and longevity. As we age longevity is something that you may consider.
There is some evidence that a keto diet increases longevity, however this is mostly found in mice studies (2). Another reason for these outcomes may be that these mice were calorie restricted (eating less food than we need) and perhaps being a lower body weight may also contribute to these impressive results.
The main thing is if you enjoy the diet and can do it long-term then go for it! Keep an eye out for our everything keto diet blog coming next week ;)
2. Do we have any ideas for healthy snacks?
Yes we do! You can visit our recipes page by clicking here.
When it comes to snacking Ben aims to pick something that is low in sugar for sustained energy release and high in protein that helps to improve satiety (feeling fuller for longer). Luckily for you, hemp seeds are efficient at meeting both of these requirements and are the perfect addition to your next snack time!
Don’t forget to add lots of fresh fruits and vegetables where possible for the added benefits of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre that have many health benefits!
3. When is the best time to take hemp seed oil capsules?
It really depends on the person, there isn’t a perfect time per se. Ben likes to take his supplements with meals to create a habit and help him remember to take them (as a lot of us often forget!).
Hemp seed oil capsules can be taken anytime as they are considered to be a food and like food we can eat it at any time! Try out our capsules and see what works for you!
Also, don’t forget to email Ben your questions at ben@13seeds.com.au for your chance to win a $20 gift voucher to our online store!
