Hey all,
Have you been wondering how you can shake your fatigue? This was one of the questions that I received this week and decided to raise in our Friday QA as others might be wondering the same!
- Derek explained “I have Crohn’s disease, can hemp seed oil help!?”
- Susanne asked, “Any tips on reducing fatigue?”
- Joan was curious “What are the health benefits of hemp seed oil, is it good for joint pain or the digestive system?”
Can Hemp Seed Oil help Crohn’s disease!?
What exactly is Crohn’s Disease (CD)? CD is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract and can lead to complications such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss, anaemia and even fatigue!
Like any inflammatory disorder the best thing to do is first remove inflammation as much as possible by cutting back on refined sugars, processed foods, and bad fats in the diet. Alcohol and caffeine can also exacerbate these symptoms further, so avoid where possible (1).
So, is hemp seed oil helpful in CD? Studies assessing fish oil (that contain the similar properties as hemp seed oil) suggest that omega 3 fatty acids are safe to use and may be helpful in cases of CD, however may not be effective as a stand-alone treatment for CD. You can use hemp seed oil as a source of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, but best to monitor your symptoms and see if it’s working for you! (2).
Tips for reducing fatigue.
Yes! The first thing to do is to make sure you are getting adequate rest. If you struggle to get a good night’s rest you can try to manage stress via mindfulness practices (eg. guided meditation, yoga and even breathwork).
You also want to make sure you are getting adequate protein, B vitamins, and magnesium in the diet. Drinking enough water is another simple way to avoid fatigue as dehydration can be a common cause. Exercising regularly can also help by increasing energy in the cells (via mitochondria biogenesis) (3).
If you still experience fatigue speak to your GP about getting a blood test to check for any nutritional deficiencies (eg. iron and vitamin B12) or send ben an email at ben@13seeds.com.au
Keep an eye out for a forthcoming blog post on how to combat fatigue for more details!
The health benefits of hemp seed oil; and is it really good for joint pain or the digestive system?
Hemp seed oil contains essential fatty acids that include omega 3, omega 6 and GLA that have a role in regulating inflammation, for this reason hemp seed oil may be beneficial for conditions characterised by inflammation eg. joint pain (4).
Hemp seeds may also provide some benefit to the digestive system due to their high fibre content that is beneficial for the digestive system and is anti-inflammatory! (5)
